The owner built this custom home in French Country styling 15 years ago on a scenic spot overlooking the Country Club fairway. Serving as a perfect family home to raise the kids it was now time for a fresh remodel. The owner yearned for a simpler more modern design approach for the interior and was happy to embrace the French Country exterior home style complimentary to the neighborhood.
We started by removing the first-floor level marble tile and substituted a 5″ wide curupay wood plank floor with consistent grain and rich dark stain. We transitioned to a large creamy rectangular porcelain tile in the kitchen providing a serviceable flooring surface and light tone to contrast the dark stained wood cabinets.
The original kitchen had 45-degree angled wall housing large refrigerators and a desk recess. This format did not suit our modern vision, so we borrowed some space from the oversized Pantry and Laundry and re- built the kitchen perimeter walls to form a square space. Large sliders were installed from kitchen to patio providing a wide opening enhancing the indoor/ outdoor aspect of living and a sliding window was installed at the sink to service the outdoor BBQ area through a pass-through.
The smaller walk- in pantry is accessed through a cabinet styled door adjacent to the repositioned refrigeration and wine unit. Perpendicular to this is a long counter zoned as the breakfast/ beverage station. It is equipped with built- in bread drawer, microwave drawer and pull- out trash. The upper cabinets are bi- fold doors operated by an automatic touch point. These provide storage for cups, glasses, stemware and breakfast dishes. The cooking station is opposite divided by a large island. A 48″ range is visually “beefed up” with pull- out spice units flanking the range finished in matching stainless steel. A streamlined hood was designed to complement the modern styling and flanking bi- fold wall cabinets provide upper storage. An appliance garage in the corner provides screened storage for easily accessed small appliances.
The wash up area accommodates re-cycling, dishwasher and dish styled drawer storage with easy window access to the outdoor counters. Refrigerator drawers are housed in the island providing fruit and veggie storage under the food prep counter. An extended waterfall counter on the island provides knee space for a casual breakfast bar or buffet when needed.
Finishes were critical to bring this transformation to the desired vision. We preferred to accent the cabinet finishes against a solid color counter and selected a figured fumed eucalyptus wood veneer on cabinet doors punctuated by aluminum framed frosted glass doors on the upper cabinets. We ran the grain horizontally on the cabinets to accentuate the modern linear look. Back splashes also run horizontally and are a combination of natural stones and glass. The colors perfectly harmonize the colors of the large solid components. Countertops are fabricated in engineered quartz and sport a beefy 3″ edge profile.
Lighting sets the stage and delicate pendants hang over the island so as not to obscure the bountiful views but are weighted by the wood ceiling panel warming the space.
